Cambodian Dancing

Cambodian Dancing

There are three types of Cambodian dancing. There are classical dances, folk dances, and dances that contain a story. Cambodian dancing has been created as a source of entertainment for the country folks, Cambodian royalty, and people who visit Cambodia. However, the classical dances has been associated with the Royal Court of Cambodian for thousands of years and is recognized as a graceful, elegant dance with beautiful and elaborate costumes. The royal palace has long enjoyed displaying and watching these beautiful classical dances. However, the common people can not see the classical dances and thus created folk dances for festivals and parties and the dances that contain a story to explain certain human events such as why there is rain or thunder.

Each gesture in a Cambodian dance symbolizes a word. The gestures when combined together are suppose to tell a story just like the lyrics that go along with it. Each dance portrays different things. Dances can vary from blessing the people who watch the dance to telling stories about nature. Hand gestures can talk about multiple topics depending on the meaning of the dance. Each gesture is suppose to be graceful and elegant. The dancers need to arch their back and they must bend a lot.
